SPECIES/GROUP : Synthetic corundum
CLASSIFICATION : Synthetic stone
The name is derived from the Greek word ‘amethystos,’ meaning not to intoxicate. The belief that the stone prevents or alleviates drunkenness has persisted since the Classical period.
Synthetic amethyst is the synthetic version of natural amethyst, created in a laboratory.
Bluish purple to reddish purple.
Cutting and polishing only.
Avoid rough handling and when not being worn, store items of jewellery separately to avoid scratches. Clean with warm, soapy water and gentle brushing. Ultrasonic cleaners should be used with caution. Avoid strong heat and abrupt temperature changes. The stone may fade if it is exposed to strong sunlight. Do not wear or leave synthetic amethyst under strong light or in direct sunlight for extended periods of time.
With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, and possessing a good toughness, synthetic amethyst is durable and suitable for use on all types of jewellery.
